PreviewI-Pan was founded at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1993 by Eugene Novotney under the name I-Pan Steel Groove. The original members of the band were all current students at various levels of education. The idea behind the ensemble was that it would give advanced players in the University's steelband a chance to hone their soloing skills in a small ensemble, and create an open forum for band members to bring in new compositions and arrangements. As each member finished his or her degree, new members would step in to ensure that the I-Pan tradition would live on.
